Pet Costume Contest Winner No Stranger to Dressing Up

This Pasadena Labrador, and his owner, have walked the costume runway before. Check out the winning ensemble, plus Mickey's opponents, in this video of South Pasadena's Doggy Day With Cats Too event.

Dressing up is a family affair for Tomoko Watanabe and her yellow Labrador, Mickey.

The Pasadena resident received a sizable gift basket from Pet's Delight in South Pas on Saturday, when local Girl Scout troops 1511 and 9491 picked Watanabe's pooch as the best dressed. A volunteer of nine years for the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA, Watanabe had a burst of inspiration for this, her third Doggy Day event, and dressed her four-legged friend as a camel.

"It seems like I can never top that idea,'' she said.

Though she didn't dress up with Mickey on Saturday, in the past she and Mickey have donned several costumes together: Frog prince (& princess), chick magnet (& his chick), carrot (& bunny), poodle, twins and leopard.

"He's a good sport,'' said Watanabe, an artist who paints pet portraits.

Another good sport on Saturday was Max, a Great Pyrenees rescued from the Great Pyrenees Association of Southern California. The 150-pound dog prefers to chill at home with his owner, Kathy Munro of Glendale, than to mingle with a large crowd. And when he's super nervous he drools. A lot.

"He's like me. He's low key, would rather just be sitting around at home,'' she said, dabbing at his slobber.
