South Pasadena May Undergo More Street Renovations

City Council approved plan to renovate eight more streets during a special budget meeting Wednesday.

Several South Pasadena city streets may get a much-needed upgrade after the City Council voted to approve construction in a special budget meeting Wednesday night.

The City Council unanimously approved spending $2 million allocated from the general fund, Measure R and the gas tax for the 2011-'12 street improvement program. A start date for the upgrades has yet to be determined.

Eight streets are slated for improvements: Hermosa Street, Hanscom Drive, Marmion Way, Mound Avenue, Via Del Rey, Mountain View Avenue, Pasadena Avenue and Raymond Alley. The city will also draft plans for street improvements on Monterey Road.

Since the estimated cost for renovation on Monterey Road was $1.6 million, Councilmember Richard D.  Schneider felt it was best to move forward with other street improvements.

“All these projects are worthwhile, but I think that Monterey Road is a special part of this city,” said Schneider. “It’s a large amount of money so we could have a special Monterey Road project over two to three years. We want to do Monterey Road right.”

The City Council approved construction on a third of Raymond Alley. South Pasadena's Public Works Director Matthew Sweeney said that several merchants complained the condition of the alley was deteriorating.

Councilmember Michael A. Cacciotti strongly advised Sweeney to stay under budget and to alert the council ahead of time if the budget exceeded $2 million.

The construction project will receive an estimated $1.2 million allocated from the general fund, $500,000 from the gas tax and $250,000 from Measure R.

The next City Council budget study session is set for May 18.
