South Pasadena Mayor Mike Ten Announces Image Award Recipients
Mayor Mike Ten honors South Pasadena writer and photographer Laurie Allee and the South Pasadena Chinese American Club with Image Awards, and presents a special award to Head Librarian Steve Fjeldsted.
Mayor Mike Ten selected South Pasadena resident Laurie Allee and the South Pasadena Chinese-American Club to receive one of the highest honors in the city, the South Pasadena Image Award. He also honored City Librarian Steve Fjeldsted with a special "Beyond the Call of Duty" award.
The city presents this award annually to individuals, organizations, and/or businesses who promote a positive image of the city beyond its borders. Mayor Ten created the award in 2004 to honor people and groups who have helped enhance the city's image.
Laurie Allee, South Pasadena writer, photographer and blogger
Allee, a columnist for South Pasadena Patch, has been photographing and writing about South Pasadena for her daily blog, Glimpses of South Pasadena, since July 2008. She posts a photo a day with commentary seven days a week, and has yet to take a day off, bringing her total number of blog posts close to 900.
"I'm surprised, humbled and extremely grateful," Allee said about this honor.
"When I started Glimpses of South Pasadena, the best way I could describe it was a love letter to the place I call home," Allee said. "South Pas is filled with so many wonderful people committed to making — and keeping — this city the treasure that it is. As a writer and photographer, I wanted to offer my own small contribution, and attempt to capture some of the details that make South Pasadena unique," she added.
Her blog has a large number of followers in South Pasadena and across the country, and her readership includes South Pas Mayor Mike Ten.
"Laurie's website 'Glimpses' is something I've been following for two years," Ten said. "It brings out some of the artistic parts and beauty of South Pasadena." He said he enjoys reading the comments left on her blog.
Allee loves the fact her readers have engaged in dialogue on her site. "It's been a thrill that so many in the community have reached out, visited the blog and joined the conversation there — adding layers of history and telling their own stories," she said.
Mayor Ten said Laurie's work "reaches beyond the borders of South Pasadena," making her an ideal recipient for an Image Award.
"What's been more surprising are all the visitors from all over the world who have fallen in love with South Pas from afar," Allee said. "For me, South Pas is not just my home but my muse. It's a joy to shoot pictures here and write about it."
Allee's column for South Pasadena Patch, Views from the Front Porch, explores a different facet of South Pasadena every week, and also features a video montage and original photographs. She has brought South Pas alive on the World Wide Web, through multimedia essays about putting down roots in this city, night in South Pasadena, shopping along Mission Street and more.
South Pasadena Chinese-American Club (SPCC)
The Mayor chose to recognize the South Pasadena Chinese-American Club (SPCC) with an Image Award due to the work the organization has done within the community.
"The group will celebrate its 21st anniversary soon and it has made a lot of impact," Ten said. "There are very hardcore, dedicated people on that board, and it's constantly evolving," he added.
Ten said the club sponsors a range of activities, from City Council debates to cultural and educational events. The club's Moon Festival drew hundreds of visitors to Library Park this past October. The group also serves dinner to the homeless at Union Station every month.
"Many of the inspiring past and present members, board members and presidents of SPCC are to be credited for this South Pasadena Image Award," said Onnie Chung, a board member of the club.
"Our passion and spirit of community service shows a positive impact to our neighbors," she added.
Chung said the 100-member strong non-profit organization has served the community through volunteer work and promoting educational opportunities.
"I appreciate the opportunity to be part of SPCC and get to know so many of its remarkable people in this organization," Chung said.
Steve Fjeldsted, South Pasadena City Librarian
This year, the Mayor created a special honor called the "Beyond the Call of Duty" award for South Pasadena City Librarian Steve Fjeldsted.
"He has brought so much excitement and anticipation to library events," Ten said. "He has brought in authors to give readings and raised the qualities of the library."
Ten said he has heard "nothing but praise" for Fjeldsted, who has "gone above and beyond" to put together compelling programs at the library.
"This award is a profound honor," Fjeldsted said in response to his award. However, he noted the success of the South Pasadena Library wasn't his work alone.
"It takes a great community to make a great library," he said. Our many fine users, staff, volunteers, sponsors, Friends, Trustees, and supporters — at City Hall and elsewhere — have all continued to improve the local quality of life through the Library."
According to Fjeldsted, events and programs help raise awareness of the library. "Libraries can't afford to wait for people to think of us. We need to do things to make ourselves prominent in people's minds."
Ten said previous recipients of the Image Awards include the South Pasadena Strings Program, the South Pasadena Review newspaper, Lissa Reynolds of the Fremont Centre Theatre and Jeff Burke of BurkeTriolo Studio.
The Mayor will present the crystal Image Award to this year's honorees at the Crunch Time Party — a fundraiser for the South Pasadena Rose Parade Float — on Dec. 29 at the War Memorial Building.

Oh my goodness! How wonderful! Congratulations, Laurie, you couldn't deserve this more.
Laurie Allee's dedication to and love for South Pasadena are evident every day in her gorgeous, loving posts about her town. She brings the heart of South Pas to life on the web through her artistic soul. Laurie treasures her home in South Pasadena and in turn she is a South Pasadena treasure.
I've also had the pleasure of dealing with Steve Fjeldsted over phone and internet when preparing my "Rooted in Reading" article for South Pasadena Patch. He went beyond the call in helping me find information about the library for my article, and was helpful every step of the way. Like the library, he's another South Pas treasure. Congratulations, Steve.

Three fine choices. Congratulations, Laurie, this is well deserved. As you know, you've inspired others to follow in your footsteps as a daily photo blogger. You've allowed Kathy and me to maintain a link to all that's good about South Pasadena. The South Pasadena Library has always been one of the best, but Steve Fjeldsted has raised the bar even higher with all the unique programs he's brought to town. And another well deserved award for the Chinese-American Club that was also recognized earlier this year with the Service Above Self Award from the Rotary Club.

Congratulations to all the recipients! The Chinese American Club is a wonderful organization and we are all lucky to have Steve F. as our city librarian.
I must add to the others that I am delighted to see Laurie Allee receive this recognition. Her blog is a wonderful artistic record of life in our city. I like the term poet laureate of the ordinary that Patrick the earlier commenter said. I must wonder however if the other commenter Karin has met Laurie. When I saw her she looked about 8 feet tall, to me!

Thank you so very much everyone. I am so honored to be among such inspiring recipients. I have heard incredible things about the work of the Chinese American Club. Congrats on the recent award by Rotory!
And Steve is just about the most wonderful librarian in the known universe. They really should come up with another title for everything that Steve does -- he's turned the library into the heart of our city and I'm so grateful to him for his work, and for his introduction to one of my idols, South Pas historian Jane Apostal. Beyond the Call of Duty is the perfect description of Steve's dedication and innovation.
I'm humbled and a bit flabbergasted by this honor. Thank you so very much for all of your good wishes and kind words.

Hey shrimp (Laurie): Well hell, someone on the City Council other than Dr. Schneider got something right. Well you know what they say, even a broken clock... Well never mind. Just think, in a year or two you'll be the one deciding who gets the Image Awards!
I discovered your blog accidentally one day, while searching for something in South Pasadena. It was like the day Rubber Soul came out! (Not really, come on!) But then I started driving around town looking for a woman with a camera. Maybe some day I'd actually meet the South Pasadena blogger. And then one day some guy calling himself dbdubya showed up and acted like he knew more about South Pasadena than I did. (He was right.) And then he invited me to the Rotary Club to meet the real Laurie Allee, and the real DBW, and the real Chieftess in person. And my life will never be the same.
Who loves you, baby? Everyone!

WOO HOO!!! Feathers in the caps of the three worthy recipients, but especially for Laurie, who moved to South Pas after she and her husband fell in love with one of its darling turn of the century houses. She has turned her new town into a place that those far and wide can admire and feel a kinship with, even if they never set foot inside the city limits. As her sister, I am busting out all over with pride and admiration for her accomplishment. If you hear a loud hoot coming from far off to the southeast of you, it's me!!

Snap! Crackle! Pop! go the buttons on my shirt. That's my kid, that Laurie Allee. I'm so proud of you. And I join her sister (above) with the hoot'n and hollerin'. I have made friends with so many I have yet to see while learning all about South Pasadena. It's been a wonderful well-deserved journey. Congratulations!
