Don't Miss Library Author Night with David Boulé on May 15

An Author Night with David Boulé will be presented in the Community Room on Thursday, May 15 at 7 p.m. David’s delightful book, “The Orange and the Dream of California” has just been published by Angel City Press. The free event is sponsored by the South Pasadena Public Library and the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library.

“The Orange and the Dream of California” takes a lively, literary, and extraordinarily visual look at the highly symbiotic relationship between the Golden State and its “golden apple. Untold thousands of adventurers and health-seekers came West in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, lured by postcards of orange blossoms juxtaposed with snow-capped mountains. The orange became a symbol of everything California promised and a glass of orange juice became the way to start every day.

With hundreds of colorful images and a sweet, tasty narrative, Boule shares the absorbing story of the orange and its impact on the historic, financial, artistic, and even romantic culture of California. He also tells the tale of citriculture—the complex and controversial world of growing the orange. “The orange and California have built upon one another for hundreds of years, explains Boulé, “crafting a vision that appeals to our universal desire for beauty, health, enchantment, and reinvention.” Boulé brings the world of the orange alive while capturing the spirit, optimism, and innovation of the many nonconformists involved in making the orange the symbol of the California Dream.

David Boulé has a lifelong fascination with the history, culture, achievements, and uniqueness of his home state. For decades he has scoured the country in pursuit of items and information relating to the California citrus industry. A career in marketing communication has given him particular insight into how the orange helped enhance the image of California.

The Library Community Room is located at 1115 El Centro Street. Doors will open at 2:30 pm. No tickets or reservations are necessary and autographed books will be available for purchase. Special thanks to Angel City Press.
