Giving Tuesday: A New Day to Make the Holiday Season More Charitable

On the heels of Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday comes Giving Tuesday, a national initiative to get you thinking about nonprofit charities. Here's a list in South Pasadena.

Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday are gone, as, likely, are your food comas and midnight spending sprees.

So why not spend Tuesday giving back -- or making a plan to give back -- with donations of money or support to charities located in and around South Pasadena?

Many charities in Los Angeles County have joined a national initiative called Giving Tuesday. Founded by New York-based community center 92Y and the United Nations FoundationGiving Tuesday is meant to supercharge nonprofit organizations during the holidays.

For a full list of partnering organizations, and complete details about the Giving Tuesday initiative, visit givingtuesday.org.

For an ample list of South Pasadena non-profits who are always looking for some extra hands or dollars, check out the city's Chamber of Commerce volunteer list. Included are:

South Pasadena Girl Scouts

Mission Hospice

Pasadena Humane Society

South Pasadena Senior Center

South Pasadena Tournament of Roses

Holy Family Church: Giving Bank

Almansor Center

South Pasadena Arts Festivals

We are on the threshold of the holiday shopping season—also called the season of giving—and Giving Tuesday wants the act of giving to go viral.

If you sign up, volunteer or even toss an organization a few bucks, Tweet it and tag it #GivingTuesday. You may also follow the initiative on TwitterFacebook,PintrestYouTube and Tumblr.

If the power lines belong to SCE (Southern California Edison), lines going from a pole to anotherRead More pole - not the ones feeding your home, call them. They are the ones who can help you on this matter.

You can definitely follow specific news! If you only wanted to follow police and fire, for example,Read More click on the News tab on the home page. Then, down the left side of the page are multiple news categories. Click the one you want and then it'll ask you if you want to receive email updates about this topic. Once you do, it'll show you as "subscribed.'' If you follow "Top News'' you receive updates on all stories.

Personally I do not want to get updates on all stories under a given category. It is too bad that weRead More can no longer follow specific stories as we used to.... As it is I get too many e-mails.... I hope patch will consider to allow following of specific stories instead of all stories under a given category.
