Music and Candles on Sunday Evening

A local resident tells us why she attends Sacramentum every month at St. James' Episcopal Church.

*Sacramentum has been CANCELED Sunday, May 15 due to a power outage. It has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 22.

Bills to pay. Phone calls to make. Children to care for. Too much work. Not enough money. Not enough time. Plenty of worries. It seems to be our normal state of being these days. Many of us are looking for a place to stop and center our focus.

Now, picture this: A beautiful, 100-year-old stone building with stained glass lit only with candles. Plus, eclectic, contemporary music. A screen projecting enticing imagery and soothing poetry. Time to sit and relax.

To me that sounds like a good way to start off my week.  To top it off, I can wear my blue jeans or shorts if I want.  ... And it's free!

If this sounds like something you’d like to check out, please join us Sunday for at 7 p.m. at  in South Pasadena.

St. James’ hosts this contemplative service once a month, and it attracts a wide range of people: young and old, students and seniors. The flyer says,"Sacramentum is an experimental emergent Eucharistic service that aims to bridge the gap between ancient liturgy and the “now” through the art of music, media and setting." A lot of us don’t really know what that means, but we keep going anyway.

Sacramentum is a welcoming environment no matter where you're at in your spiritual journey. Come as you are. When you get there, you won’t need to fumble through a flyer or a prayer book. Just be there. Nobody will call you out and insist you give your testimony (my own personal fear). Just sit back, relax. Let the talented musicians work their magic. Let the speakers speak and participate however the spirit moves you. Contemplate.

Sacramentum is often followed by a wine and cheese reception. Come and mingle if you choose.
