New Latin Restaurant to Open on Mission Street

No sooner had La Monarca opened than construction started on Crossings, and now: Aro Latin Bar and Restaurant plans its opening for fall.

The restaurant will take over the space at 1019 Mission St., the site of the former Harvest Bread Company, which closed unexpectedly in September. Of the additional eatery, South Pasadena City Manager Sergio Gonzalez pointed out that restaurants are great for the local economy: not just for the sales tax they generate, but the spillover activity they create for nearby businesses.

“We are very excited about the recent increase in restaurants on Mission Street, and expect that the trend will continue,'' he said.

A few years ago, Gonzalez said, the city partnered with the Chamber of Commerce on a Retail Analysis and Land Use Study. Officials found that restaurants and home décor shops would be great fits for "our small, charming, walkable community.''

City staff will continue to work with the chamber to capitalize on this as much as possible.

But more importantly, he added, "We’re thrilled about the great choices our residents will have to eat at locally.''

La Monarca, a Mexican bakery, opened last December. Crossings, located next to Buster's in the city's historic Edwards & Faw building, is owned by Vintage Restaurant Concepts, founded by Patrick and Stephanie Kirchen of South Pas. It is slated to open in late summer.
