Winning Pet Costumes: Bride and Groom, a Captain and a Camel (Photos)

Girl Scouts from South Pasadena troops 9491 and 1511 judged the four-legged contestants Saturday morning for the annual Doggy Day with Cats Too event.

Named for a mouse and dressed like a camel, Mickey, a yellow lab from Pasadena, walked away with the first-place prize in the pet costume contest at Garfield Park on Saturday.

The annual event, Doogy Day with Cats Too, included presentations about treating first-aid and how to correctly muzzle your mutt, as well as a variety of literature on pet food banks, therapy dogs and animal rescue organizations. But it was the costume contest, judged by Girl Scouts from South Pasadena troops 9491 and 1511, that seemed to wag most of the tails.

Bride and groom Maggie and Sundance, therapy, service and hospice dogs from Lending a Paw, netted third place and a $20 Urban Pet gift card for their owners. Second best-dressed pooch went to Sammy, who sported a Hawaiian shirt and captain's hat. Sammy, a bichon frise, earned a $30 Urban Pet giftcard.

And the grand prize went to Mickey, whose owner Tomoko Watanabe received a gift basket from Pet's Delight featuring treats, toys and a fluffy bed a tad too small for her costumed canine. Not that it will go to waste. A volunteer at the Pasadena Humane Society and SPCA, Watanabe once fostered a kitten whom she just couldn't give up.

"If Candy doesn't like the bed, we'll donate it,'' she said.

Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported the full name of the Pasadena Humane Society. It is the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA.
