A local support group for stay-at-home moms is having an open house Thursday at Garfield Park.

Three local moms gathered Wednesday afternoon at Garfield Park with snacks and toys in hand for their weekly play day as a part of the Moms Club of South Pasadena.

South Pas resident and former president of the club Portia Besocke joined the group more than five years ago.

"I was new to the area and didn't know any moms," she said.

Established in 1985, Moms Club is an international group that offers stay-at-home moms an opportunity to bond with other parents while their children build friendships with same-aged kids in the community.

Moms Club of South Pasadena was formed in 2007 and has approximately 50 members (from South Pasadena, Alhambra, San Marino and the 91775 of San Gabriel). This Thursday, from 10 a.m. to noon, it's hosting an open house at for new members.

Many of its members, Besocke said, join after moving to the area from out of town.

Diana Thompson was originally a part of The Foothills group but joined South Pasadena's when she moved about a year ago.

"It's a really great way to meet neighborhood families and moms," she said. "Being a stay-at-home mom is a full-time job—an important job and one that requires assistance and a support network. "

The group also holds monthly mom's nights out and kid-friendly field trips. For more information, visit Moms Club of South Pasadena.
