Reported Drunk Driver Plows Through Home

Family inside the home unharmed in the aftermath of the crash.

A family of nine was lucky to walk away without so much as a scratch after a alleged drunk driver rode through an intersection, hopped the curb and drove into a residence Sunday.

The accident was reported around 2:24 a.m. in the 1700 block of Alhambra Road. The drunk driver was traveling north on North Raymond Avenue, ran through the intersection, hit the curb, went through the front lawn and hit a house, according to Sergeant Mike Neff of the South Pasadena Police Department.

Police arrested Veronica Villanueva, 24, from Alhambra, on suspicion of DUI. The woman was issued a citation and released.

A family was fast asleep inside the home at the time of the crash. The homeowner, Carmen Gillespie, believed the crash was initially an earthquake, so she jumped up and then smoke filled the home, according to KCBS 2 News.

"Smoke is filled in the house and I’m screaming, ‘Fire! Fire!’ to wake up all the kids… and little did I know it was a van right in the middle of my front room."

Gillespie's son had been doing homework where the van came to a rest, but went to bed two hours prior, KCBS 2 reported.

we lived next door to this house for a long time. While we were there, two drunk drivers drove through the door instead of knocking. The owners put up concrete posts but aparently it was not enough to stop this driver. Glad people inside were OK.

That's amazing, Peter - Carmen, who lives there now, showed me how the car took out one of the posts and it hurtled through the air, smashing her entire left window and landing near the sofa. I wrote a follow up last night - I interviewed the woman, who is in very good spirits. http://patch.com/A-zPv9

You can definitely follow specific news! If you only wanted to follow police and fire, for example,Read More click on the News tab on the home page. Then, down the left side of the page are multiple news categories. Click the one you want and then it'll ask you if you want to receive email updates about this topic. Once you do, it'll show you as "subscribed.'' If you follow "Top News'' you receive updates on all stories.

Personally I do not want to get updates on all stories under a given category. It is too bad that weRead More can no longer follow specific stories as we used to.... As it is I get too many e-mails.... I hope patch will consider to allow following of specific stories instead of all stories under a given category.
