Sen. Carol Liu to Attend WISPPA's Annual Cocktail Party

WISPPA is inviting members of the public to attend the July 16 event.

The ladies of WISPPA (Women Involved in South Pasadena Political Action) are inviting the public to their annual cocktail party, Mix it Up, at 6 p.m. on July 16.

"Bring a friend and get to know us,'' said WISPPA's Lela Bissner, noting it will be an evening of good appetizers and conversation.

The event will be held at the home of Mary Urquhart, a WISPPA member. Her home is located at 1210 Chelten Way, South Pasadena.

The honored guest is Sen. Carol Liu of the 25th District, which encompasses South Pasadena. She is a fifth generation Californian on her mother’s side and the daughter of an immigrant (her father emigrated from China before WWII).  She started her career as a secondary school educator prior to assuming administrative responsibilities in northern California.

Following her move to southern California, Liu became involved in numerous community issues, leading to her election to the La Canada Flintridge City Council where she served for eight years. She then ran for the State Assembly where she authored key legislation that became enacted on education, domestic violence, water quality and other important issues.

Following her time in the Assembly, Liu was elected to the California State Senate, the first Asian American woman to do so.  She has been well recognized throughout her career for her leadership and public policy advocacy and expertise, particularly on education issues.

WISPPA’s purpose is to push for accountability, integrity, and transparency in our city government, and to actively encourage strong, well-qualified candidates, and especially women, to run for City Council and to serve on City Commissions.

WISPPA also seeks to offer opinions and advocate for positions concerning the well-being of the City of South Pasadena, and to provide information to the electorate regarding City Council candidates and city issues.

While WISPPA encourages women to run for local office, it does not endorse, support or oppose any specific candidate.
