South Pasadena Scores Well in Walkability Survey

A national survey by Walk Score confirms what we already knew.

Every month, Patch freelancer takes us on an exploratory walk through the streets of South Pas. 

From the to the , Finnegan doesn't miss a beat with her specific directions and rich photos. And residents, in turn, are rarely hesitant to take the presented challenge.

So, it's no wonder South Pasadena ranked fairly well—coming in at 68—in Walk Score's recent walkability ranking of cities in California.

The site ranked cities from 1 to 100 based on how close residents live to nearby amenities (based on location and population data from the 2010 Census). West Hollywood took the honors as the most walkable city in California, with a Walk Score of 89, while Mead Valley in Riverside County got a measly 8.

Here's the break-down of how South Pas residents responded to the survey:

  • 49 percent of South Pasadena residents have a Walk Score of 70 or above.
  • 100 percent have a Walk Score of at least 50.
  • Zero live in car-dependent neighborhoods.

Neighboring Pasadena scored the same (68). La Cañada Flintridge did worse with a score of 44. And Los Angeles scored 66, down from previous years.

The survey was conducted by Walk Score—who believes walkable cities are good for our health, wealth and sense of community.
