Though the 2013 Perseid Meteor Shower has already started and will continue through Aug. 24th, the biggest bang for your viewing buck should be Aug. 11–13. At the right place and the right time, expect to see 60-80 meteors per hour.
And since the moon will be in its waxing crescent phase, moonlight will interfere only slightly with your viewing pleasure.
Where and how to view:- The further from city lights, the better. The best chance for a spectacular, local show is to travel north from South Pas to La Canada-Flintridge. Take Angeles Crest Highway up a ways, until you find the perfect landing site
- Bring coffee. The most dazzling display will take place in the wee hours of the morning
- The Perseids are remnants of the Swift-Tuttle comet, which orbits the sun every 133 years.
- Bits of ice and dust, they are more than a 1,000 years old and zip along at speeds of about 37 miles per second.
- Though some of the meteorites are as small as a grain of sand, it's said they can have the kinetic energy of a nuclear bomb
