Whiz Kid: Libby Rainey Is Making It Happen

This up-and-coming journalist is a star student who is involved with South Pas High School's newspaper, student government, sports and theater.

This week's comes in the form of  16-year-old, multitalented Libby Rainey, a junior at . Rainey serves as news editor for the school newspaper, The Tiger.

Rainey, who maintains a 3.9 GPA, reports that she "always wanted to be on the paper." Last year, as a sophomore, she served as the associate editor for the opinion section, and this year's jump to news editor is even more fulfilling.

"I really like the atmosphere on the paper," she said. "I think it's really fun. I like being the news editor because it's really exciting when we get a cool story," Rainey added.

Rainey, who is an integral part of the newspaper's team, said, "I'm always trying to get people to come up with stories. Sometimes we have to dig for stories."

When she's not searching out a story, Rainey can be found singing in advanced choir or playing varsity volleyball at South Pasadena High, where she is also active in student government. She also has a penchant for theater and will star as Maria in the school's upcoming production of The Sound of Music.

Rainey is no stranger to journalism. Her mother is author Alison Bell, who writes the South Pasadena Patch advice column and contributes to the Los Angeles Times, and her father is also a writer for the Los Angeles Times. Her older brother, Coleman, is the editor-in-chief of The Tiger. 

Libby Rainey doesn't know what the future holds as far as her career is concerned, but for now, she enjoys working for the paper. In any event, this girl of many talents is sure to wow in whatever she does in the future.
