Persian/Flamenco Music and Dance Group Terra Vas

South Pasadena Music Center & Conservatory will host Terra Vas, a local music and dance group dedicated to performing Persian and Middle Eastern music combined with Flamenco fusion music made popular by groups such as the Gypsy Kings.

Terra Vas means "earth vessel" in Latin.  The group formed around the core of singer/keyboardist Kimberly Harrison and Brad Wright, an expert in Persian and Arabic music and performer on the kemanche, a bowed string instrument which is an ancient precursor of the violin. They were soon joined by percussionists Susanna Whitmore and Shan Ahmadi.  As they explored the intersections between meditative Sufi and European medieval music, the groupbecame intrigued by Arabic/Flamenco fusion, and started interpreting pieces by artists such as the Gypsy Kings. As they forged into this new territory of upbeat dance music, they met Marguerite Kushuhara, a professional dancer with a wide variety of Middle Eastern dance experience, particularly Sufi-inspired whirling. For this concert in South Pasadena, the group will be joined by guitarists Jim Whitson and Michael Campagna, and bassist Chet West.

Kimberly Harrison is a vocal and piano instructor at South Pasadena Music Center & Conservatory, where Michael Campagna serves on the faculty as a guitar instructor and ensemble director.
