The Upstage Theatre Arts School will be having their second performance this summer, The Pirates of Penzance Jr. musical, on Aug. 9 and 10. The musical is a children’s production, and the cast range from the ages of 6 to 14.

Producer Adrian Cohen said that the theater group wanted to go a different direction from their previous production of Grease.

“This is more difficult to get into but when you do, it’s stronger and deeper,” said Cohen. “We think it’s great training for acting and singing; the songs are tough and the acting requires a lot of technique.”

The cast had to go through a three-week rehearsal in preparation for their roles, said Cohen. All are currently enrolled as students at the Upstage Theatre Art School.

Upstage offers year-round after school and summer performing arts programs, in South Pasadena and Westwood. Adrian Cohen began giving these programs in South Pasadena in 1999, offering 30 classes and productions ever since.

There will only be two performances on Friday, Aug. 9 at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 10 at 6:30 p.m. The performances will take place at the Main Theatre in South Pasadena High School on 1401 S. Fremont Ave.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids 13 years or younger and children three years or younger can get in for free.
