Longtime AD passes away

Though  relatively small in  size but a giant in  stature a legendary figure has left our midst. It is with much sadness that I learned of the  passing of Ralph Punaro, the athletic director emeritus at South Pasadena  HS for many years. Ralph left his  footprint at SPHS and their athletic program, and had an impact with all who knew this outstanding man over the years.  Though Ralph and I did not always agree on everything, I learned to admire and respect him and I truly liked the man. He was devoted to his job and  those around him. Most importantly he was  accessible, unlike others who have held the  job.  He was omnipresent at  all athletic  events. His knowledge of the position he held was unsurpassed. When myself  and others in the media had a question he always had the right answer. He was liked by his fellow faculty and  students alike. He had  a great sense of humor , as was  indicative  by the message on his answering machine. As a coach in both  baseball and basketball he  brought out the best in his proteges and guided them to success. His  players loved and respected him as did  fellow coaches. As athletic  director, he directed a successful program that won numerous championships for the school. And  he made every attempt to hire the best coaches that were available (although some  of his  decisions were controversial)  Many  do not know that this humble  man was a standout athlete in High school (All CIF) and  college ( all conference at UCLA). In my many years as a news photo-journalist I  have  been affiliated with many sports  programs and met  hundreds of coaches and athletic directors, but NONE will  ever compare to Ralph Punaro. I considered him  a friend and was proud of it. He had a huge impact as  on me  as  a person and I will miss  him tremendously. Though he may have left us physically, I believe his presence around the school will continue through  eternity.  RIP Ralph  we will miss you.

PS- I would  like to urge school officials to dedicate a  location on campus to his memory. Suggestions are: Punaro Field (Baseball field); Punaro Field house (locker room under stands); or Athletic Office, where he devoted so much of his time
