Patch Blog: The Fuss About Gus

Gus's: the First Stop for a foodie in South Pas.

Put away the grill for a day, and use that extra time to take a stroll to on Fair Oaks Avenue.

has been around for stuffing us with their home cooking. I went for a Sunday dunch—the time between lunch and dinner—and was happily greeted by a handsome well-dressed gentlemen.

The place at first glance seems kind of small and narrow but as you head towards the back, it widens up ... just like your hips if you eat here too much.

We were told to sit wherever we liked; we chose the outdoors—nice day, cool breeze. There were three tables outside, which were all full but one.

We sat next to two groups. To our immediate right was an older couple with their beloved pup, who got nothing but the royal treatment as well: Plain grilled chicken chopped and placed on a to-go lid.

The three-top of friends were having an intense convo that needed to be calmed by happily stuffing their mouths. We were greeted and helped by the entire staff at one point or the other, which was so nice. The waitress was sweet and very bubbly.

I ordered the Catfish and Chips, and my friend got the Beer Braised Texas Brisket with sweet potato fries; we indulged!

The cat fish showed laying on top of seasoned fries giving it a nice presentation. There could have been a bit more coleslaw, but the spicy tartar sauce was amazing. Honestly, first time I’ve actually liked tartar sauce.

The fish was cooked perfectly. I almost didn’t need as much seasoning on it; the contrast was a bit difficult. The tenderness of the fish made you almost want the fish alone without the crunchy top. The delicious fries had enough crisp to make the meal complete.

The seasoning on the catfish was nice—just a bit much for me personally. My friend loved her food, and took what was left of it home. Although believe me, it wasn’t much.

We had to turn down desert, although the couple next to us ordered something that looked mouth-watering.

Gus's is ideal for families, familiar dates or outings with friends. The price is good; the food is good; the service is excellent. I am definitely going there again. Next time, we'll have to try the breakfast menu!
