Patch Blog: A Question of Weakness or Betrayal

Brother Christopher Sale discusses why he's forgiving Bishop Zavala for fathering two kids. Do you agree?

As we once again face one might assume that this plague that the devil has infected the priesthood has its purpose. What better of a way to destroy the church then by infecting the priesthood?

Once a priest falters through weakness, the faithful become angry and in the eye the adversary he claims mission accomplished. In the case of Bishop Zavala, it certainly caused us to be angry. However let us be angry for the right reason.

Though it was weakness that caused Zavala to fall, we must comprehend that fact that we all fall. And for that, forgiveness is what we as Catholics do best. Forgiving transgressions is definitely difficult even when we sometimes believe we are strong in our faith.

For me its not a matter of weakness; it's a matter of betrayal; it's a matter of trust. The fact that a man purports to be a man of God sitting in a Bishops chair every week and doing it without any remorse.

As we look at our Church today we must compare it to a vintage house. Worn, tattered and more then likely infected with termites. A vintage house that has weathered many storms; just like this house, the Church has seen its share of battles. Although the many assaults of the adversary has broken the will of the faithful we have always retrofitted our faith with our heaviest artillery, the power of prayer.

As St. Padre Pio taught us, the Rosary is our weapon.

This recent scandal is not an isolated problem. We must pray that our priest will not succumb to the temptations of the devil. This scandal has stirred the emotions of many in thinking it's time to end the celibacy policy. I can honestly attest to the fact that this is not the solution. The solution is prayer, because with prayer the challenge of Chastity becomes a way of spiritual life.

God bless, Br. Christopher Sale B.P.P.
