Why the 'Blue Moon' Isn't Blue

Friday's full 'Blue Moon' will, no doubt, be lovely to look at, but it is not likely to be blue.

On Friday evening sky viewers will have a chance to see the 'Blue Moon,' a phenomenon that sounds much more exciting than it actually will be.

That's because the Blue Moon is not actually blue - Friday's full moon t is called a “blue moon” because it is the second full moon in a month, according to EarthSky, which mentions other definitions of the term.  Because a full moon occurs every 29.5 days, it only happens roughly every 2.7 years that there are two in one month.

So a blue moon Friday night is not any more likely than on any other night.

“It’s very rare that you would see a blue-colored moon, although unusual sky conditions – certain-sized particles of dust or smoke – can create them,” EarthSky notes.

In fact, the entire notion of calling the phenomenon a 'Blue Moon' is a mistake, says JPL volunteer ambassador Tony Rice.  The use of the term dates back to a 1946 Sky and Telescope magazine article which "misinterpreted the usage of the term in The 1937 Maine Farmers' Almanac," Rice writes.

Still, for those who want to see the full moon, it will no doubt be a lovely viewing experience - how often do you go out and take a long look at a full moon anyway? So if you want to view it here are some good local options:

  • The Cobb Estate - The park at the top of Lake Avenue stays open 24/7 and if you follow the path that breaks left away from the junction with the Sam Merrill trail, you can very quickly get above the sight line of trees and have a clear view of the sky.
  • - Altadena's two higher elevation parks are a good bet for viewing.
  • Highway 2 - If you want to go further afield, you can quickly drive to a very high altitude and get a nice clear view without having to hike at all.

Patch Asks: Is there another spot, South Pasadena, where you might recommend we moon gaze? Tell us in the comments!

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly reported the frequency of a full moon. It is every 29.5 days.

Thank you but rather than ask South Pas residents to dig into their own pockets yet again, why notRead More help teachers by using funds already available? We have historically high reserves and stable state funding for several years. The district refuses to even negotiate salary increases. As of the past week, the district also now refuses to negotiate reduced class size changes. The recent parcel tax was passed largely to ensure that class sizes would stay low. How is it they can take money from citizens promising this and then not follow through?

This is sad and angering. Supers seem to cursed with a strain of lowsy. This is when the people enRead More masse need to stand up for the teachers and start their own pot of relief until the over due raise comes on line.

Thanks for the gesture. I'm one of those South Pas teachers. It would also be nice if you could askRead More the superintendent, now that we have historically high reserves (thanks partly to teachers taking on more work and receiving no raise for five years) and stable financing from the state, could we please now get a cost of living increase? He's refusing to allow us to negotiate this matter.

If by "learning loss" is meant student forgets what he has learned, then I would guessRead More that there was no learning at all, but a memorization of facts given. If by learning loss is meant there was a gap where no curricula was given, then that is just the point of Summer Break. Learning other non class room subjects such as what a hike in the forest has to offer..a trip to the beach...reading a good book. Just sitting under a tree and enjoying. My first impression of LearnBop was it was learning how to dance the Bop to Little Richard or Bill Hailey. Now, that is something even I could get into.

I cant tell you where I live....you would ban my posts ! But, my childhood roots are in Glendale,Read More but I have many pleasant memories of the Pasadena Winter Garden where I used to skate when I has about twelve (1950). I was playing with puberty and oh, the girls in their shortie dresses and legs....There was such a romantic feel to the place. I think I recall a circular wood burner in which there was a fire going on cold days and nights. I still have a punch card showing I was a member of the Penguin Club. There is an area in Glendale that has a peculiar feel to it and it is between Virginia and Mountain....roughly between Ruberta and Central. This isnt Pasadena, of course. That area was my stomping grounds in the 40's. Right there, I thought...it was right there where we talked and laughed....under the light of a street lamp..she was so very cute and precocious. All gone away so long ago..I "heard" her laugh in a capricious breeze that sprang, up...also carrying the scents of Jasmine...So many stories like this in Pasadena too. The people who came and went, but left in their wake a presence like a fire fly's glowing arc.
