South Pasadena already has a Winchell's; but could Dunkin' Donuts, arguably its corporate nemesis, join the mix?
Dunkin' Donuts, announced recently on PR Newswire that it is expanding to Southern California with a long-term goal of having more than 15,000 Dunkin' Donuts restaurants in the United States.
"Specifically, the company is recruiting multi-unit franchisees for Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, San Bernardino, Ventura and Orange counties and expects restaurants in these markets will begin to open in 2015. The company is also interested in identifying qualified food service operators for a wide range of non-traditional venues including colleges and universities, casinos, military bases, supermarkets, airports and travel centers," stated the release.
Chief Executive Officer, Dunkin' Brands and President, Dunkin' Donuts U.S. Nigel Travis said, "Expansion to California has always been part of our plan to grow Dunkin' Donuts' presence in the U.S."

Whether South Pasadena is a good fit from a business perspective for DD is another issue, and that's a business decision for DD. An obvious prime location would be the corner of Fremont and Mission, but there are issues with the Mission Street Specific Plan that would impact DD locating at that site. Also, from a business perspective, DD offers two primary items, pastries and coffee. SoPas already has a crowded coffee marketplace: Charlie's Coffee House, Kaldi, Buster's, 4 Starbucks, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Heirloom Bakery, McDonald's and Winchell's. From the stand point of donuts/pastries/sandwiches, DD would have to compete with several established outlets as well: Winchell's, Heirloom, Charlie's, 4 Starbucks, Union Bakery, Munch Co., Subway, La Monarca Bakery, and Buster's, not to mention the major grocery stores, Von's/Pavilions, Ralph's, and Bristol Farms. The DD in Alhambra seems to have closed recently, probably due to a difficult access location. If we see a DD in SoPas anytime soon, it will likely be on the Huntington Drive corridor, to take advantage of the traffic, not in the city center, where the competition is greater.
