Kidd's Jewelry Heist Opens In South Pas (Video)

Located in the back of The Dinosaur Farm, the jewelry parlor is open Tuesday through Sunday. You can drop on by anytime, or plan a party in advance.

Exotic beads and vintage charms spill out of overturned luggage. Gold-rimmed mirrors adorn the walls amongst maroon floral wallpaper. And library lamps are scattered on a table covered with newspaper clippings.

This is the scene at South Pasadena’s latest shop:

“It’s like the inside of a old train car,” explains owner Kelly Kidd. “...where kids create the loot.”

It’s not just sparkly rhinestones, butterflies charms and neon feathers for the girls. There are sophisticated gems for the adults. And fun oddities like buffalo teeth pendants and spiders in resin for boys.

“Obviously, I’m a dude,” says Kidd. "... I like to design stuff for boys.”

“I don’t want to be known as a bead store,” he continued. “I wanted to create a place where you have an experience—not just your traditional retail shop.”

Kidd says he’s always had a knack for construction. As a student at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, he became accustomed to creating big artistic installations. “Jewelry is pretty much the same thing but on a smaller scale,” he says.

After graduating, he was hired as a corporate trainer for Discovery Kids where he helped open 35 stores and developed birthday party packaging.

And while he admits jewelry design is something he fell into, his friends say he’s pretty talented.

On a Thursday afternoon in March, ESPN host Jenn Brown is hanging out at the South Pas shop working on her own jewelry line that Kidd helped launch about two months ago.

“I took a class from him, and he was so great,” Brown said. “So I asked him to help me collaborate, and create a collection.”

“What a great place to come in and make jewelry.”

Kidd says he’s looking forward to getting involved and acquainting himself with the community.
