La Monarca Plans December Opening

The bakery, which specializes in Mexican sweet breads, will move into the space at 1001 Mission St.

South Pasadena soon will have a new bakery in town.

La Monarca, a bakery with stores in Huntington Park, East Los Angeles and Santa Monica, will open an eatery at the former site of The Kitchen Standard, the corner of Mission Street and Meridian Avenue. City officials and representatives from La Monarca expect the grand opening to happen in early December.

Rachel Wolff, a spokeswoman for the bakery, wrote in an email to Patch that everyone on the business side is very excited for the opening.

"South Pasadena is the perfect location for the next La Monarca. The team at La Monarca believes in the importance of community,'' she said, noting one of the team members lives nearby.

Alfredo Livas, co-owner of La Monarca, lives in the San Rafael area and spends many of his weekends in South Pas.

"I know the community, the farmers market and most of the restaurants in the area,'' Livas wrote Patch in an email. "We love the charm of downtown and its strong sense of community. I had been scouting locations for a few years until finally the right space became available.''
