Patch Blog: It's Crunch Time for South Pas Float

Everything you need to know about our float leading up to the Rose Bowl Parade Jan. 2.

Well, construction is winding down on the South Pasadena Rose Parade float as we transition into decoration mode for our 2012 entry “When Life Gives You Lemons.”

Starting Saturday, Dec. 17, we will be hitting the ground running on dry decoration and other prep work for floral application that will start the day after Christmas. There will be lots of volunteer opportunities for anyone interested in helping out and we will provide documentation of community service hours for high school students that bring their (or other HS) forms for signatures.

Our hours of operation for float decoration (Note: We will not be decorating Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.) will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. More detailed information can be found on our volunteer page by clicking here.

For safety and insurance considerations, we ask that the bulk of our volunteers be over 13 years of age to work independently and that those under 13 have a parent or guardian present at all times during the times they are volunteering. All volunteers under the age of 18 must have a medical release form completely filled out and signed by a parent or guardian prior to reporting to their shifts (it is a good idea for any adult to have one filled out and on file in the event of an emergency).

We highly recommend wearing items that you don’t mind ruining and closed-toe shoes are a must (tennis shoes work great, no flip-flops or sandals). We are in a large open tent with minimal heat and damp evening air, so warm layers are highly suggested for evening shifts.  More information on our safety guidelines can be found by clicking here.

We are located in the at 435 Fair Oaks Ave. A map for out of area travelers can be found by clicking here . Parking is limited to residents only on Mound Ave starting 12/26. We recommend street parking on Fair Oaks Ave in front of the War Memorial or State Street east of Fair Oaks. Please do not utilize the Orchard Supply shopping center lot for parking and be mindful of time limits on Fair Oaks.

We would also like to remind you about our Crunch Time Party on Dec. 29 from 6 to 10 p.m. Please join us for a fun night of dinner and socializing to raise support for building our float. A fabulous dinner and dessert will be provided by Elements Kitchen for $35.00 per person. There will also be awesome raffle prizes along with a live and silent auction. All proceeds go directly to building your South Pasadena Rose Parade float. For ticket information, please contact Joan Shaw at (626) 799-7813.

We also have a limited number of Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Tickets. The parade tickets are for the grandstands on Orange Gove Avenue and some of the Rose Bowl seats are 40 yard line area. Interested parties should contact Ted Shaw at (626) 419-8684.
