College Advising—What Colleges Want from You!

With the Holiday Season upon us, it’s time to think both inward and outward. Who are we? And what do we have to give others?  These are questions not only of the season, but for college admissions.  The college admission process is all about finding yourself and your place in the world.  Once you have those simple questions answered, you will have your best chance at applying to the schools that will accept you for admission.

Students often ask, “What can I do to look good to colleges?” There are honest answers to that question, of course.  Great grades, test scores, extra-curricular activities, and service all reflect your profile for future success in college.  But there is more.  When it comes to students and their futures, college admissions officers are looking for students who will fit nicely at their college.  They want to be the Perfect Fit College for their students just like you want your future school to be a perfect fit for your future adult self.

To find this match, start by making a list of what you like to do.  Make it both playful and serious. If you like surfing, write it down. If you like doing jigsaw puzzles, put that on the list as well. Hobbies, academic subjects, work environments, and service to the community can all go on the page. This is a free association exercise. Make it a piece of art for your wall. Find a large sheet of paper and fill it up. By doing this, you’ll be illustrating yourself-- the real you.

Colleges are always looking through applications to find the essence and diversity of a student. They want students who will be successful at their school which is why your transcript remains the most important document in your admissions folder. Beyond that, however, is the Rubik’s Cuber, the juggler, the marathon runner, the tuba player, the knitter, and the person who cares about politics…. List who you care about. Is it the homeless, your parents, your handicapped neighbor, or the old woman standing on a corner waiting for a bus? The list you make defines the inner you.

When you truly know yourself, you’ll be more confident with what you have to offer any school. Your diversity will define your acceptability and help you refine your college list, which is exactly what college admissions officers are looking for. You’ll also find that your college application essays will be much easier to write.  Give it a try and let me know how you feel.
