3 SPHS Seniors Get 10K Towards College

Three South Pasadena High School students were each awarded $10,000 towards their college tuition this month thanks to the Oneonta Club Foundation, Inc.

Family, SPHS Principal Janet Anderson, SPUSD Superintendent Joel Shapiro and four of the five school board members were on hand when seniors Sofi Goode, Natalie McLain and Nick O'Brien received the grants at a education meeting hosted by the Oneonta Club May13.

"The winners chosen typically have achieved or pursued an activity in a passionate way and will present themselves well to the interviewing committee," said Scholarship Chairman Carl von Bibra.

Natalie McLain stood out from the group because of her athletic drive (figure skating) and passion for working with youth. McLain is attending UCSD next year.
"I was ecstatic just to be in the top ten, primarily because of the amount of respect I held for the other students I had been grouped with," McLain told Tiger Online in April, after she heard the news that he had been chosen.

Goode will be attending Wesleyan College in Connecticut next year. It was Goode's passion for writing including her role as Editor-in-Chief of the school paper (Tiger) and novel writing that won her a top accolade.

Nick O'Brien is attending USC next year. It was O'Brien's leadership, both locally and statewide with the YMCA's Youth and Government, in addition to his perseverance with SPHS baseball that won him a top accolade.

The Oneonta Club Foundation also awarded two teachers with "Teacher of the Year" honors at the ceremony back on May 13. SPMS teacher Andrew Adanto was recognized for creating an eighth-grade mentor program while Marengo elementary teacher Holly Lang was praised for helping bring a character education program to the school.
