SPHS: Retirement and Departure

Veteran South Pasadena High School teacher Rick Martin, who created the social studies English Language Development program, is retiring after 22 years in South Pas, the Tiger Online reported

Joining Martin in his departure from South Pasadena Unified School District is English instructor Mark Afram, who is leaving SPHS to teach at Los Gatos High School in Northern California, the school's newspaper reported

Throughout Martin's career, according to the article, he has taught World History, Global Studies, and United States History courses.

Martin told the newspaper, “Most students pass through the school system no problem because they know how it works, but ELD kids enter school without knowing the language or the culture and they’re scared,” Martin said. “I have been able to establish a different and more personal relationship with them because of that vulnerability, which has been rewarding.”
