Cacciotti Retains City Council Seat, Mahmud Edges Past Putnam

Winners in School Board elections include Kipke, Giulioni and Eilers.

Michael Cacciotti was reelected to the South Pasadena City Council for the fourth time Tuesday, and first-time contestant Diana Mahmud won the only other electable seat on the council in a narrow race that resulted in the defeat of Councilmember Philip Putnam.

According to final results announced by the office of the Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, Cacciotti won 2,099 votes (37.5 percent), Mahmud received 1,560 votes (27.9 percent) and Putnam got 1,414 (25.3 percent). The fourth candidate in the race, Alan Reynolds, who ran unsuccessfully for city council in 2011 for the first time, won 517 votes (9.2 percent).

The total number of registered voters in seven precincts of South Pasadena was 16,251, according to the county clerk’s figures. There were 5,590 ballots cast, including ballots by mail. The number of permanent absentee voters—those who automatically receive a ballot in each election—stood at 5,392, according to South Pasadena City Clerk Sally Kilby. (Registered voters in 2011 numbered 15,127; the number of ballots cast was 4,727, including 2018 by mail, and voter turnout was 31 percent.)

In elections to the board of the South Pasadena Unified School District, where five contestants were vying for three seats, Board Member Michele Kipke was reelected, winning 2,168 votes (28.9 percent). Also reelected as board clerk was Elisabeth Eilers, who won 1,546 votes (20.67 percent). The third seat went to Julie Giulioni, who won 1,686 votes (22.54 percent).

In other results, Evelyn Zneimer was elected city clerk in an unopposed race, and Gary Pia was elected city treasurer, also unopposed.
