Quiet Beauty: The Japanese Gardens of North America
Join us for our next Open Day when Kendall Brown--historian, curator and author--will present a slideshow of exquisite photographs and discuss his new book, Quiet Beauty: The Japanese Gardens of North America.
“Japanese-style gardens in North America are evolving to fit the needs of Americans,” Brown writes, “emphasizing wellness and mindfulness through Japanese-based garden design.” They “invite us to slow down, open up our perception and change our thinking.”
Quiet Beauty is an intimate look at 26 of the most beautiful and serene Japanese-style public gardens in the United States and Canada. It is a scholarly and highly engaging study of the history and development of Japanese Gardens in America.
Kendall Brown is Professor of Asian Art History at Cal State Long Beach. He will also discuss the historical and cultural importance of the Storrier Stearns Japanese Garden, designed in the late thirties and one of the few private gardens in the United States that has remained intact and faithful to its original design.
