No Eating or Drinking or Feeding Babies at July 4 Celebration

Baby formula is a drink, and drinks are not allowed on South Pasadena High School's artificial football field. Water in plastic bottles is the only permissible beverage on the field.

Kids might spit or bleed on it, but baby formula is a no-no for the high school football field.

South Pasadena Police Officer Claude Gonzales this week ticked off a list of restrictions for the Fourth of July fireworks celebration at South Pasadena High School. Chief among the offenders to the field's artifical turf is any food or beverage (except water in plastic bottles) including "baby food, formula and alcohol,'' he said.

Superintendent Joel Shapiro said the allowance of only water is a regulation for all synthetic tracks and artificial turf fields throughout the region. In South Pas, it has been a rule in the seven years since the new track and field were installed.

"Unfortunately, when any other food or drinks are brought onto the track and field, and when spills occur, serious damage is done to the surface,'' he wrote in an email to Patch.

Gonzales pointed out if a person dropped glass on the field, shards could get stick in the material and injure the athletes.

Additionally, no smoking is allowed on the field, he said, noting, "We want to keep this a fun day and keep everyone safe.''

Doors open at 5:30, with the fireworks beginning after sundown.
