Blog: Food Pantry in Urgent Need of Canned Goods

South Pas gearing up to clean and fill Friends in Deed food pantry!

Food supplies at Pasadena’s Friends in Deed Pantry are running low so a collaboration of Pasadena area residents, churches and schools are gearing up this month to replenish supplies.

La Salle High School in Pasadena, Holy Angels School in Arcadia and local congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are organizing food drives and preparing to help clean and stock the food pantry on April 27.

Friends in Deed in Northwest Pasadena assists approximately 2200 people each month, but often runs out of food in the Spring, after holiday donations have run out. They rely on donations from local grocery stores and individuals during the lean months to provide canned goods, cereals and staples for low-income families to pick up each week.

They are in urgent need of canned meats such as tuna, salmon and chicken, stews, ravioli and hearty soups but also accept beans, flour, peanut butter and jelly, pasta, oatmeal and boxed cereals. Last year, the “Mormon Helping Hands” food drive collected over 4,000 cans for Friends in Deed Food Pantry. Allison Keeney helped organize a group of South Pasadena school-age girls to gather food for the pantry. "They were excited about the challenge," she said. "Each girl brought at least 20 cans and boxed goods, some even more."

Friends in Deed accepts donations at the pantry at 444 E. Washington Blvd. each day from 9am to 5pm and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is organizing a special food drive on Saturday, April 27 at 770 Sierra Madre Villa Avenue, Pasadena and will be collecting food donations from 10am to noon. Pasadena Councilman Gene Masuda will attend the event.
