Patch Blog: 5 Tips for Hosting a Fall Yard Sale

Need to do some fall cleaning? Make some extra cash by hosting a yard sale. Here are some tips that will help make your fall yard sale a success.

Typically, yard sales are held during the summer when it is warm outside, but having a yard sale during the cooler fall weather can be just as successful! If you want to host a yard sale this season, follow these tips to help you make your fall yard sale a success.

  • Take advantage of the upcoming holidays. Many people are already out looking for frugal holiday gifts. You can give your yard sale a holiday theme and separate items into “gifts for…” categories like men, women, and kids. Also be sure to showcase old holiday decorations that are for sale because shoppers will be looking for those as well.
  • Offer your patrons a warm drink. Coffee and hot cocoa are cheap to make, and your patrons will greatly appreciate the offer. Visitors will be much more likely to stay and purchase something if you greet them with great hospitality and give them a warm drink to fight off the cold.
  • Advertise your sale. Hanging up bright colored posters at major intersections is a great way to catch the attention of your neighbors. To attract even more attention, request an ad in the local paper a week ahead of time so people will know about your yard sale.
  • Put prices on everything. Yard sales are hard work and you will get tired out easily. Putting prices on all of your items makes it easier for your customers to browse and you won’t be getting asked about prices every two minutes.
  • Play some relaxing music. If you can, play some music in the background. This will allow customers to feel more comfortable discussing purchases with their friends without feeling like they have to whisper secretively.
