How Do You Celebrate Flag Day, Anyway?

One of our nation's most misunderstood holidays arrived on Thursday, June 14, 2012. Find out what you need to know about Flag Day and why it exists.

It's Flag Day again and you don't know what to do about it.

The holiday is at once simple and confusing. Obviously it's meant to honor the U.S. flag—an important and powerful national symbol—but just how one is supposed to do that remains unclear. What can we all do on Flag Day besides, you know, fly the the flag?

To understand what we're supposed to do on Flag Day, we need to understand the origins of the holiday.

The first celebration of Flag Day came in 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson established the holiday by presidential proclamation, according to the National Flag Day Foundation. An Act of Congress in 1949 signed by President Harry S. Truman officially designated June 14 as the day to celebrate the Stars and Stripes.

So, knowing how the holiday came about, how can we go about celebrating it. Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer. But here are some suggestions for observing Flag Day:

  • Attend a local Flag Day ceremony

  • When in doubt, barbeque
  • Wikihow.com suggests starting a "Patriotic Pageant." I don't know what that even means. See how how quickly vague holiday observances can devolve?

The gist is: fly the flag and remember what it stands for.
