College Advising: The Loyola Marymount Deadline is Very Soon!

The Loyola Marymount University application supplement asks students to:  Reflect Deeply, Think Critically, or Consider the Least of Their Neighbors. What do these words mean? If you gave up applying to this school because these topics were too difficult, take another look. You might surprise yourself and come through with a great application essay after all.

The deadline for Loyola Marymount University is January 15th so there is still time to find your voice and apply. Below are some guidelines to help you do your best on one of the following topics:

Topic #1:  This topic discusses social media as a disruption to our time for deep reflection. Think of this topic as a way of educating your reader about the benefits of Facebook, Twitter, or even e-mail, while considering why the use of social media is sometimes offensive. Be honest and fair. When do you ever have time for deep reflection? Is social media a problem in your life? By considering both sides of the question, you will learn more about yourself and create your best writing here.

Topic #2:  This topic asks you to reflect on a time that demanded critical thinking from you and how your choices or decisions integrated intelligence and character.  Isn’t that a great question?  But what does it mean?  Focus on the words choices and decisions, intelligence and character. Simply put, tell a story about a time that you made a choice (or decision) that ultimately reflected your superior intelligence or deep character. This is a topic that asks you to tell about a path you followed or a decision you made that had a huge impact on you or your family. Is there a time that you consciously decided to do something for someone else rather than for yourself?  (Or, the other way around!) If so, you’ll have a wonderfully successful story to tell.

Topic #3:  This topic asks you to tell about someone you know who has affected your thoughts on social justice. Once you identify your hero, write about his/her philosophy, then reflect on how you might follow in their footsteps. Think of someone who does good “for the least of their neighbors,” which means that they help those who would otherwise be forgotten. Do you know someone who teaches literacy, works with the elderly, dying, or homeless?  If you do, consider their work and how it affects you. Have you helped or do you want to? Your honest look at the needs of others and how you can make a difference will make a wonderful essay here.

Loyola Marymount University has generous acceptance percentages and offers a wonderful education in a great location. Now is the time to think deeply about your college future and the essay you could write for your admission there.  (If you would like me to read what you write in the next few days, I will be happy to.  Contact me on my website.)
