Windstorm Wreckage: Add to Our Gallery

Area residents are without power Thursday morning. There are also reports of downed trees and power lines.

Approximately 25,000 customers are without power across the San Gabriel Valley. There are widespread power outages in South Pasadena, Sierra Madre, Pasadena, Altadena, Arcadia and La Canada.

The power outages were caused by the strong winds that have begun to move into much of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

The wind is expected to continue through Friday, and gusts could reach 60 to 80 mph.

  • Have a flashlight and extra batteries ready.
  • Never use candles in an emergency, especially when there's wind involved. Candles are a fire hazard.
  • Unplug or turn off any appliances you were using when the power went out.
  • Flip all your light switches off except for one- that way you'll know when the power comes back on.
  • Never light a fire, or burn charcoal indoors. If you get cold, it's safer to layer up.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed to keep your food as fresh as possible. Check to see if your food has spoiled before you eat it.
  • If your power goes out, use a flashlight to check to see if any of your lights or appliances are working. If some things turn on, it may just be a blown fuse or circuit breaker.
  • If none of your appliances or lights work, check to see if other houses or buildings on your block have power. It could just be your house that's affected.
  • Do not touch and stay away from downed power lines and utility poles. Live power lines are dangerous—they can cause serious injury or death.

Water capacity and pressure are at critical low levels in South Pas. Edison is working on the problem but it is not known when power will be restored, police report.

Residents and business owners are urged to conserve water until further notice and until power can be restored.
