South Pas Police Officers Earn MADD Awards

Mothers Against Drunk Driving honored three South Pasadena Police officers and one sergeant for their "outstanding contributions'' to help stop DUIs.

Several members of the South Pasadena Police Department have been honored for their assiduous patrolling of DUI suspects culminating in arrests, authorities have announced.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) awarded Officer Ryan Bernal, Officer Ed Acosta, Officer Mike Sanchez and Sgt. Matt Petersen pins Thursday for their service over a one-year period. The pin is red to symbolize MADD’S mission, which is to represent the victims of impaired driving crashes and, more specifically, to memorialize and honor those peace officers who have been injured and killed in impaired driving collisions, said Capt. DeAnn Wheeless.

The South Pas officers were awarded for 10-24 arrests and for 25-49 arrests within a one year period: Bernal – 25 arrests, Sanchez – 26 arrests, Petersen – 29 arrests and Acosta – 30 arrests. The men serve under Capt. Richard Kowaltschuk.
