Fatal Accident Reported on Pasadena Avenue

UPDATE, 12:39 p.m.: A 72-year-old man from Los Angeles was the victim of a fatality accident on Pasadena Avenue at Arroyo Drive, Sunday morning.

The victim was a pedestrian walking northbound in the crosswalk on Pasadena Avenue when a van driven by a 77-year-old man was traveling eastbound and failed to stop and struck the victim, said Joseph Payne, South Pasadena chief of police.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, also a Los Angeles resident, may face vehicular manslaughter charges. There were no signs of intoxication and a blood toxicology report is pending, police said.

PREVIOUSLY: Patch received a report of a fatal auto/pedestrian traffic accident at Pasadena Avenue and Arroyo Drive Sunday morning.

Around 7:50 a.m., officers with reported a woman down in the street. By 7:54 a.m., traffic was being diverted from eastbound Pasadena to northbound Arroyo Drive, according to scanner reports.

At 9:15 p.m., officers were still on scene with a dark, older minivan and what the reader described as a body covered in a sheet.

This was sad for both parties involved. The victim was probably listening to music (headphones on the scene) so he probably didn't see or hear anything. The man stopped breathing right as paramedics arrived, which was in about 3 minutes. Tragic for both men and both families. It's sobering how fast life can change.

I lived on Pasadena Ave. for 20 yrs. That really can be a dangerous intersection. Flashing lights or a stop sign might help. I've seen many cars traveling westbound on Mission and they come to the curve onto Pasadena Ave. and have misjudged their speed. That poor bus bench there has been run over many times
