Alleged Kipnapper Arrested in Rosemead

A 44-year-old man suspected of trying to kidnap an 11-year-old boy from a Rosemead street was arrested Sunday, authorities said.

Bin Zhang was arrested about 10 a.m. in the 2700 block of Del Mar Avenue, according to Lt. Phillip Marquez of the sheriff's Temple Station.

Deputies matched him to the description of a man wanted in connection with the attempted kidnap, which happened in January near the intersection of Del Mar Avenue and Emerson Place, not far from where Zhang was arrested, Marquez said.

Authorities learned of the unreported alleged kidnapping attempt after issuing a press release on Wednesday about a child annoyance case involving a suspect who grabbed an 11-year-old girl at Bitely School in Rosemead around 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 30, Marquez said.

Authorities have not said if Zhang is suspected in that case.

Zhang was being held at the Temple Station jail in lieu of $100,000 bail, Marquez said. He is due in court in El Monte on Wednesday, according to sheriff's online booking records.

In the Jan. 30 case, a man in his 40s entered the school grounds and approached the girl from behind and grabbed her collar, said Sgt. S. Morsi of the sheriff's Temple Station. The girl turned and saw it was a stranger. She broke free of his grasp and ran. It is not known in what direction the suspect ran.

He was described as  about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 160 pounds with long stringy black hair, a thin mustache and scratches on his left cheek. He was wearing a white tank top with dirty blue jeans and was barefoot, Morsi said.
