UPDATE: Man Shot By Deputy In Canyon Hills

Per sheriff’s department policy, the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administration leave pending an investigation into the incident.

UPDATED AT 12:09 p.m.: A man has been shot by a deputy in Canyon Hills, authorities have confirmed.

The incident took place around 8 p.m. Wednesday night outside a residence in the 32000 block of Meadow Wood Lane, according to Riverside County Sheriff's Department Deputy Albert Martinez, who was not at the scene.

Lake Elsinore resident Edmundo Banuelas, 40, was hit by law enforcement gunfire and sustained non life-threatening injuries after he allegedly attacked a deputy, reported Sgt. Lisa McConnell of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The incident began following a call about a disturbance at Meadow Wood Lane in Canyon Hills, a sprawling community nestled inside the eastern portion of Lake Elsinore.

"The caller said a Hispanic male adult and a Hispanic female adult were arguing in the street in front of a residence," the sergeant said.

When the deputy arrived on scene, Banuelas was standing in the street, McConnell continued. The deputy spoke with the man and placed him in the back of his patrol car. After talking with the woman involved in the alleged disturbance, the deputy returned to his patrol car and removed Banuelas from the back seat, McConnell explained.

"Upon having his handcuffs removed, Banuelas turned and attacked the officer," the sergeant said. "In an attempt to defend himself, the officer deployed his baton and gave repeated commands for Banuelas to cease his attack. During the assault, Banuelas was able to grasp ahold of the officer's baton. Fearing for his safety, the officer fired his duty weapon striking the subject."

Banuelas was transported to a local hospital for treatment and has been placed under arrest; he was the only arrest made in the incident, Martinez said.

Per sheriff’s department policy, the deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administration leave pending an investigation into the incident.

What always tripped me out in the Kelly beating is that he was out on the streets in the first place. Why not in the care of the guy referd to as his father i would see crying on the news. Wounder if he felt guilty. If maybe he had been little more understanding when it came to his sons illness.

Speaking on sitting back and Judging. Why do you assume he going to sue. I can assume that ur a Mother of two, sitting home while the taxes payer's like Ed support you. So let not sit back and Judge nor Assume. Not saying the officer did what he felt he had to do.What make you think Ed did what he had to do to protect himself. That right we don't know,

Your comments are incomprehensible. I must assume you are either dyslexic or lack a modicum of intelligence. Your articulation and grammatical skills leave a lot to be desired. If I have erred in my assumptions please accept my humble apology.

RSO has new training procedures in hand to hand combat in the use of the Baton, THe New and better method as the upper ranks would say reduces the civil liabilitues of the county. But according to rank and file that use it in the street it puts officers at greater risk of being hurt and their baton taken away. So more people will ultimatly be shot because they (RSO) are not allowed to use the tools they have the way they should be,
