Off-Duty Officer Shoots and Kills Suspect in South Pasadena

The shooting occurs at 1:01 a.m. in the 1000 block of Arroyo Verde Road.

An armed suspect was shot and killed Sunday morning by an off-duty Cal State University, Los Angeles police officer in South Pasadena, a sheriff's official said.

The officer-involved shooting occurred at 1:01 a.m. in the 1000 block of Arroyo Verde Road, said Deputy Tony Moore of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.

The officer was confronted by the armed suspect when the shooting occurred. The suspect then fled, striking a parked vehicle a short distance away, according to a department statement.

South Pasadena police responded to the scene where the suspect, who was suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper torso, was being detained. Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The suspect's handgun was recovered at the scene, according to the statement.

The Bureau is assisting South Pasadena police in their investigation, Moore said.

"The off-duty officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics," Moore said.
