Police Chief Joe Payne Responds to Traffic Incident

When signals are out and temporary signs are posted, police do not direct traffic. The vehicle code requires motorists to stop at an intersection where signals are out, says Payne.

South Pas Police Chief Joe Payne says posed a dangerous situation and that his officers came out to Fair Oaks Avenue and Huntington Drive Thursday morning in response to a motorist complaint.

Temporary stop signs were placed at all three ends of the intersection throughout the day to safely direct traffic.

Chief Payne wrote to Patch in an email Thursday night:

"Mr. Ehrlich was waving cars through posted stop signs and causing a very dangerous condition. When the officer arrived due to a complaint from a motorist about Mr. Ehrlich, Mr. Ehrlich berated the officer.

When signals are out and temporary signs are posted, we do not direct traffic. Regardless of postings, the vehicle code requires motorists to stop at an intersection where signals are out. It is the most orderly way and prevents injury and death."
