Video: Watch South Pas Police Take Down a 'Suspect'

In a 90-second simulation at the South Pasadena Police Open House Sunday, officers wowed the crowd with rappelling, smoke and a gun-toting demonstration of how they get the bad guys.

First came the wows, and then the whimpers.

A tactical assault simulation at the South Pasadena Police Department on Sunday left a crowd of kids wide-eyed with awe, as officers rappelled down a building before chasing an armed suspect.

Guns drawn and outfitted in full protective gear, the officers set off an earsplitting (controlled) explosion, and used the smoke to hide their movements. The demonstration, part of the department's annual open house, featured simulated gunfire and a take-down arrest of the suspect -- a move that prompted thunderous cheers from parent and kids -- some who'd been teary-eyed moments earlier from the surprise boom.
