City: South Pas Wins Bike to Work Challenge

South Pas business Ellen's Silkscreening gave away T-shirts to people in the city who biked to work on May 16.

The results are in: The City of South Pasadena has won the Bike to Work Challenge, officials said. 

South Pasadena City Council, in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), challenged the elected officials of the San Gabriel Valley cities and the City of Los Angeles to see who could score  the largest number of pledges to pedal to work on May 16.

Based on Metro’s index calculations, which used the number of pledges per capita, the City of South Pasadena rode away with the win, Mayor Richard D. Schneider announced.

The challenge was a great way to encourage residents, business owners, employers, school districts and others to do their part to improve the quality of life, said councilman Michael Cacciotti, himself a staunch bike advocate. 

Business owner Ellen Daigle, whose South Pas store Ellen's Silkscreening, pledged  three employees would pedal to work on May 16. Daigle touts the statistic that 80 percent of her employees use public transit to get to work. Additionally, Daigle promised a free T-shirt to anyone in South Pas who biked to work last month.

How many did she give away? Twenty-six, she said Friday.
