Local Anti-DUI Campaign Receives $450,000 Grant

The Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force received a $450,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic safety to continue DUI enforcements.

Glendora Police, the coordinating agency for the grant, will administer the grant to the entire county. The Monrovia Police Department participates in the program.

Through the awarded funding, officers will conduct DUI and drivers license checkpoints and DUI saturation patrols targeting intoxicated drivers and repeat offenders.

“With the additional grant funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety for the past seven years, we have been allowed to proceed with our mission of saving lives and bringing awareness to our communities through coordination of the Avoid the 100 DUI Task Force,” said Glendora Police Chief Rob Castro in a press statement.

Many of the Avoid the 100 DUI campaigns are in effect during the summer and winter seasons, as well as around party holidays and weekends, such as Super Bowl Sunday, Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day and Cinco de Mayo. 

According to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol-related crashes drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted. According to the NHTSA, checkpoints provide the most cost-effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies.

Participating agencies in the Avoid the 100 task force include the L.A.P.D., California Highway Patrol in Los Angeles County, the L.A. Sheriff’s Department, as well as dozens of local police departments.
