Rain Delays Construction on Fair Oaks

Construction crews dwindled down to cleaning crews due to stormy weather.

Construction on Fair Oaks Avenue between Columbia Street and Monterey Road came to halt this week due to heavy rainfall. If weather permits, contractors will resume work on the road next week.

“There hasn’t been much construction activity this week because of the weather,” said Gabriel Nevarez, the city's Public Works Project Manager.

Nevarez said that this week construction crews worked hard to prevent debris from entering storm drains. Crews also kept the site clean to ensure street access was open and accessible for the public.

If weather permits, construction crews will spend two to three days next week installing swail and asphalt between the curb and the gutter on the east side of Fair Oaks Avenue, Nevarez said. The number one northbound lane and two southbound lanes will be open to the public.

In two weeks, if construction remains on schedule, crews will begin work on the center median, and only the outside northbound and southbound lanes will remain open, Nevarez said.

Despite the delays, Nevarez said the majority of the project is still scheduled to finish by June.

On Monday, March 21, the public works department extended construction hours from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. to 7 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays. Additionally, construction crews can now work on the project on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“The increase in hours will help the project move quicker,” said Nevarez.
