Tournament of Roses Committee Announces Annual Float Fundraiser Raffle Winners

Should the committee's chair for games and tickets be allowed to walk away with the second prize? Oh well, why not!

The South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Committee held its annual float fundraiser raffle for the so-called “Ultimate Tournament of Roses Experience” at City Hall this past week.

With the help of committee representatives Ted Shaw and Raffle Chairperson Alan Vlacich, Mayor Richard Schneider conducted the raffle drawing at the City Council’s Nov. 20 meeting, picking three winners for the first, second and third prizes.

Vlacich announced the winner of the 1st prize as Ricky Jones, who won four VIP Rose Bowl game tickets between the 45-yard line.

The 2nd prize was four VIP Rose Parade tickets in the reviewing stand at Orange Grove and Colorado Boulevard. In a twist of fate that sparked much laughter in the council chambers, the mayor picked a ticket that had SPTOR Games and Tickets Chairperson Shaw’s name on it. (For a brief moment, it appeared as though Vlacich was returning Shaw’s winning ticket to the drawing pile, but then he decided against it.)

The winner of the 3rd prize—$300—was announced as John F. Watkins.

The SPTOR is hoping to raise $20,000 through 200 tickets priced at $100 each for the South Pasadena’s float in the Jan. 1, 2014 Rose Parade, Shaw told the city council before the drawing.

South Pasadena has the oldest float in the Rose Parade, along with Los Angeles, Shaw said, adding that the city was the winner in the past couple of years and is hoping to be a winner again this time around.
