A Nemesis Unmasked: What Caltrans Doesn't Want You To Know

710 ON TRIAL IN SOUTH PASADENA

The  Annual Heritage Awards on Friday, December 3 promises to be especially intriguing to anyone in the region who might be curious about the proposed 710 Freeway extension. 

Following deserved awards to  and Oaklawn Historic District advocates Ray Girvigian and Bob Magilligan, the spotlight will be on keynote speaker Diane Kane, PhD, who for many years served as Heritage Resources Coordinator for Caltrans' District 7.

Dr. Kane's topic, "A Nemesis Unmasked: What Caltrans Doesn't Want You To Know" will briefly track the history of the Rte. 710 project, provide an insider's glimpse of the decision-making process, and explore project alternatives. Her knowledge and perspectives are sure to spark a lively question and answer session.

Diane is retired from City Planning and Community Investment Department at the City of San Diego, where she handled large scale historic surveys as part of the long range planning process. She has taught architectural history and planning at several southland universities, including UCLA and Cal Poly, Pomona, serves as Trustee of the California Preservation Foundation, and is a volunteer for the La Jolla Historical Society.

Comerica Bank and their design and construction team will be honored for the excellence of the historic façade rehabilitation of their centennial California branch at 824 Fair Oaks Ave.

Girvigian and Magilligan earned their award through tireless advocacy and thorough documentation for a historic district that twice before had been rejected by the South Pasadena Council although it has been listed on the California Register for decades.

The event will be held at the , 435 Fair Oaks Ave. Come at 6 p.m for a "meet 'n greet." The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited at no charge. Donations to the Foundation's 710 Freeway education effort will be appreciated, but not required.
