School Board Meeting: Student Achievement at Monterey Hills

Here's the second of five speeches from principals at SPUSD on student achievement.

At the  Board meeting Tuesday, principals of all five schools presented 2010-2011 plans for student achievement. 

 Principal Joe Johnson presented the progress of four specific goals.

Goal No. 1

To Improve math achievement.

What they've done:

  • Early bird math proficiency classes from January to April with  28 second graders, eight third graders, nine fourth graders and nine fifth graders. Areas of weakness were identified using Pearson SuccessNet
  • PTA purchased 18 extra student stations for various classrooms in the Spring. 
  • Pearson representatives presented two major workshops throughout the year.
  • Implementated the four-step lesson plan. 
  • Two teachers attended the California Math Conference.
  • Utilized the ROP program. 

Future Goals:

  • Additional math training for teachers. 
  • Enrichment activities as well as problem solving.
  • To see if the early bird program has a correlation with CST scores in the fall. 

Goal No. 2

Approving reading achievement for second through fifth graders. 

  • A teacher worked with 66 students two days a week January through April. Results: 19 out of 20 second graders improved or maintained, as well as nine out of 12 third graders, 15 out of 16 fourth graders and six out of 10 fifth graders. 
  • Used Imagine Learning.

Goal No. 3

To use Imagine Learning three or four days a week using 30 minutes per session with each student. 

  • Eighteen teachers were assigned licenses. 
  • Utilized PTA-purchased computers. 

Future goals:

  • Continue to look for site licenses and have teachers obtain those licenses at various times throughout the school year.

Goal No. 3

Improving achievement in all second language learners.

  • Used technology to make programs more accessible. 

Future goals:

  • Use thinking maps to break down information into meaningful content for the learner.
  • Offer more hours of Imagine Learning.

Goal No. 4

Make the school safe and secure all the way around.

What they've done:

  • Incorporated bully prevention through the use of interactive lessons such as visual aids and DVDs.
  • Emphasized positive leadership.
  • Initiated role playing amongst students.
