API Test Scores 2011

SPUSD scored one point higher in 2011 than it did last year.

(SPUSD) showed minimal API growth Wednesday with a score of 912—up one point from 2010.

This is less significant than the previous year's growth—where SPUSD jumped 15 points from 2009 to 2010, according to the State's Department of Education Growth Academic Performance Index.

Here's a breakdown for 2011:

  • 932 (Up three points from 2010)
  • 947 (Up two points from 2010)
  • 946 (Up 20 points from 2010)
  • 912 (Down 16 points from last year)
  • 887 (Up eight points from 2010)

The state determines API scores using a weighted formula. The formula includes the  tests administered in May, and the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). The California Standards Test (CST) results are most heavily weighted.

So it makes sense why South Pas Middle School would decrease in its API performance. Sixth and seventh graders showed a decline in its math CST scores while seventh and eighth graders showed a decline in its English/Language Arts scores this year.

Regardless, SPUSD still met state requirements.

Schools that score a 800 API or above are expected to maintain that level of achievement while continuing to improve the academic performance of all students. A specific numerical increase is only mandated from schools who fall below 800 API.

Here are some API scores for academically comparable districts in the area:

  • San Marino Unified - 955
  • La Canada Unified - 942
  • Manhattan Beach Unified - 932
  • Arcadia Unified - 925
