South Pasadena Pulls Off Cross Country Sweep

The Tigers won both the boys and girls race in the first Rio Hondo League meet at Lacy Park in San Marino Thursday.

may have lost arguably the greatest distance runner in the history of the Rio Hondo League to graduation.

But not having did not seem to bother the Tigers’ cross country program Thursday as both the boys and girls’ varsity programs earned victories on the three-mile Lacy Park course in the first Rio Hondo League meet of the season.

South Pasadena won the boys’ competition with 22 points, followed by La Canada with 52 and San Marino with 61. Monrovia was fifth with 117 points.

South Pasadena junior Paul Messana won the boys’ race with a quick burst just yards from the finish line past La Canada’s Brendan Greene, as he finished in 16 minutes, 18 seconds.

Greene finished in 16:19.

Josh Wilson (third, 16:19), Alex Tranquada (fourth, 16:19), Max White (sixth, 16:37), Cullen Irvine (eighth, 16:55), Tyler Gershman (11th, 17:29), and Tyler Armstrong (18th, time not available) round out the Tigers.

For the Spartans, Brandon Newquest (seventh, 16:54), Jonathan Skaggs (13th, 17:39), Matthew Schultz (14th, 17:56), Dillon Bromely (16th, 18:06), Chris Skaggs (21st, 18:22) and Daniel Del Valle (26th, 19:06) round out the Spartans.

had three top-10 finishers as Peaky Yuter was fifth in 16:37. Andrew Jack was ninth in 16:56 and Robert Moreton took 10th in 17:09.

Michael Pardo was Monrovia’s top finisher as he finished 15th in 18:02.

South Pasadena scored 27 points in winning the girls race. La Cañada was second with 36, followed by San Marino with 80 and Monrovia with 107.

Helena Van Loan took the race in 18:46, beating out La Cañada’s Sonja Cwik, who followed in 18:58.

Also for the Tigers were Kaylee Anderson (fourth, 19:30) , Cece Zhu (fifth, 19:38), Anika Renken (sixth, 19:45), Jessica Hitchcock (11th, 20:39), Laura Lussier (12th, 20:51) and Julia Primuth (20th, 22:05).

Anna Frederich (third, 19:22), Meghan Fuelling (eighth, 19:55), Hannah Yoho (ninth, 20:15), Eloise Dimose-Nording (14th, 21:14), Michelle Dominguez (15th, 21:14) and Caroline Fontes (18th, 21:55) round out the Spartans.

Alissa Barraza was San Marino’s top finisher as she finished seventh in 19:47.

Amanada Mansoorbakht took 10th in 20:26 as Monrovia’s top finisher.
